Overview

The Jomolhari (Soe Yaksa) Loop Trek is one of Bhutan’s most popular high-altitude adventures. Over 12 days, this trek takes you through Jigme Dorji National Park, past alpine meadows, yak herder villages, and sacred lakes, with stunning views of Mount Jomolhari (7,326m). Starting in Paro, the journey includes Tiger’s Nest Monastery before heading onto the trail. Highlights include camping beneath Jomolhari, crossing Bonte La Pass (4,890m), and exploring remote valleys. Ending in Thimphu, this trek combines breathtaking Himalayan landscapes with Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage.

Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging – High Altitude Trek

Day 1 – Paro Arrival

Arrive in Paro, meet guide & driver, transfer to hotel. Visit Paro Dzong and stroll through Paro town and Kaja Throm. Overnight in Paro.

Day 2 – Tiger’s Nest Hike

Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) at 3,120m. Sacred Buddhist site perched on a cliff. Overnight in Paro.

Day 3 – Paro to Pine Camp (Trek Start)

Drive to Shana, meet trekking crew, and trek into Jigme Dorji National Park. Camp in woodland near river. Overnight in tents.

Day 4 – Pine Camp to Thangthangka

Trek along Paa-Chhu River, crossing bridges and rhododendron groves. First view of Mt. Jomolhari. Overnight in tents.

Day 5 – Thangthangka to Jangothang

Pass army checkpoint, trek through yak pastures and Soe village. Camp beneath Mt. Jomolhari. Overnight in tents.

Day 6 – Jangothang Halt

Acclimatization day. Optional hikes to Jomolhari Base Lake or ridges for views. Relax at camp. Overnight in tents.

Day 7 – Jangothang to Yaksa

Cross Bonte La Pass (4,890m) with spectacular views. Visit Tshophu twin lakes before descending to Yaksa village. Overnight in tents.

Day 8 – Yaksa to Thombu

Cross Takhung La Pass (4,520m) and descend into Thombu Shong, a wide pasture with yak herder huts. Overnight in tents.

Day 9 – Thombu to Paro (Trek End)

Cross Thombu La (4,380m) with panoramic Himalayan views. Descend to Gunitsawa, meet vehicle, and transfer to Paro. Overnight in hotel.

Day 10 – Paro to Thimphu

Drive to Thimphu. Visit Memorial Chorten, Textile Museum, and Folk Heritage Museum. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 11 – Thimphu Sightseeing

Visit Buddha Dordenma, Takin Preserve, and Jungshi Paper Factory. Explore handicraft shops before driving back to Paro. Overnight in Paro.

Day 12 – Departure

Transfer to Paro Airport for departure. Farewell and prayers for safe journey.
